Why Do Black Triangles Occur?

Post Periodontal / Gum Disease Therapy

Black Triangles can appear after treatment for periodontal / gum disease. This is often after inflammation of your gums have settled as the disease process stabilises.

Gum Recession and Bone Loss

One of the main causes is gum recession, where the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth due to periodontal disease, aggressive tooth brushing, or natural aging.

Bone loss around the teeth due to periodontitis can cause the gum to lose support, leading to the formation of black triangles.

Post Orthodontic / Invisalign Treatment

Shifting teeth during orthodontic treatment can create spaces between teeth that were previously tightly aligned, potentially leading to black triangles.

Teeth which tend to

Tooth Shape and Size

Teeth with a triangular shape (wider at the top and narrower at the base) are more prone to forming these gaps, as there is less gum support between them.

Natural Aging

As we age, both the bone and gum tissue supporting the teeth naturally recede, making black triangles more common.

Naturally Gappy Teeth / Diastemas

Gappy teeth or diastemas are not black triangles per se, as they typically have a genetic or hereditary cause, but their management can often be similar to closing black triangles.

Black Triangles are the 3rd most dental aesthetic concern after tooth decay and dark crown margins

Bioclear™ is a minimally invasive dental technique used to close black triangles and improve the appearance of teeth. It does not require the removal of natural tooth structure, but the surface of the teeth are cleaned and lightly roughened to improve bonding.

While it offers many benefits, there are some potential risks and considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Chipping or Fracturing: Although the composite material used is strong, it may still chip or fracture over time, especially if subjected to excessive force or if proper care isn't taken.

  2. Staining: Composite materials are more prone to staining compared to natural tooth enamel or porcelain, especially if exposed to staining agents like coffee, wine, or tobacco.

  3. Durability: While durable, the Bioclear composite is not as long-lasting as other restorative options like crowns or veneers, and may need periodic maintenance or replacement.

  4. Technique Sensitivity: The success of the procedure is highly dependent on the dentist's skill and experience with the Bioclear method. Inexperienced practitioners may not achieve the optimal aesthetic or functional results.

  5. Gum Irritation: Some patients may experience temporary gum irritation or inflammation after the procedure, particularly if the composite material extends slightly below the gum line.

  6. Tooth Decay: If the composite material is not properly maintained with daily brushing and flossing, it can accumulate plaque plaque can accumulate. This can increase the risk of tooth decay in the areas surrounding the restoration if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. Regular dental check-ups and good oral care practices are essential to prevent this issue.

This is only a brief list of risks. Other risks may affect your particular case which have not been mentioned. You will require a complete consultation with a dentist to determine what risks exist in your case

Black triangle closure can be completed in a single appointment following an initial consultation appointment.

Multiple black triangles can be closed in a single appointment. The length of the appointment is determined by the number of the black triangles to be closed and the difficulty of individual cases

We typically recommend a consultation with Dr Tran when you are close to completing your orthodontic or Invisalign treatment (typically 4-6 weeks from finishing). This allows us to coordinate with your orthodontist on the removal of attachments/brackets and to ensure your final retainer fit well to the composite bonding.

We have seen patients from interstate for black triangle closure procedures and our clinic in Windsor has seen patients travelling from overseas to see us.
